Lunar sketch - crater Riccioli

This is last nights sketch of Riccioli which is 146km in diameter and sits right on the western limb of the moon.
I used x2 barlow and 10mm Pentax XW to give x300 magnification.

M15

M15 / Great Pegasus cluster / NGC7078
Constellation - Pegasus
Globular cluster

Date - 26/8/12
Location - Home
Seeing - III
SQM - 19.8 (NELM 5.3)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 7mm Pentax XW x218 TFoV 0˚19'

Sketch materials - White Conte pastels and ink pen

Sketch notes
Fairly dim and tricky to resolve any stars in the glob but after 20mins they gradually 'popped' into view. Core brightness evenly spread from the centre.
Would probably have seen alot more but fairly poor seeing and high wispy cloud meant it was a tricky glob to sketch.

M57

M57 / Ring nebula / NGC6720
Constellation - Lyra
Planetary nebula

Date - 26/8/12
Location - Home
Seeing - II
SQM 20.3 (NELM 5.6)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 7mm Pentax XW x218 TFoV 0˚19

Sketch materials - White Conte pastels and ink pen

Sketch notes
Lovely view with from low power through to high. Slight oval shape from N to S with a thicker edge on the S side, faint surrounding stars, didnt even attempt to view two stars in the centre due to seeing conditions.

M71

M71 / NGC6838
Constellation - Sagitta
Globular cluster

Date - 22/8/12
Seeing - III
SQM - 19.5 (NELM 5.1)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 10mm Pentax XW x153 TFoV 0˚27'

Sketch materials - White pastel and ink pen

Sketch notes
Funny little globular in quite a rich star field.
The glob appeared like it was split down the middle and could of easily mistaken the faint stars on each side as nebulosity and it not being a glob at all.
High wispy cloud and its SE direction from me meant that seeing conditions were only III on the Antoniadi scale.
Will be checking back on this one from darker skies and better seeing conditions.

M6

M6 / Butterfly cluster / NGC6405
Constellation - Scorpious
Open cluster

Date - 21/8/12
Location - Narkurs
Seeing - III to IV / Patchy cloud
SQM - 21.2 (NELM 6.2)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 13mm Ethos x117 TFoV 0˚51'

Sketch materials - White Conte pastels and ink

Sketch notes
Really enjoyed this sketch!
One of the few Messiers which actually appear as the name describes IMO.
Same as M7, fairly poor seeing conditions, low elevation and patchy cloud would probably mean a lot better viewing on another night. This is one open cluster I'm already looking forward to seeing again.

M7

M7 / Ptolemys cluster / NGC6475
Constellation - Scorpious
Open cluster

Date - 21/8/12
Location - Narkurs
Seeing - III to IV
SQM - 21.3 (NELM 6.2)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 13mm Ethos x117 TFoV 0˚51'

Sketch notes
Only 4˚ above the horizon and sketched in patchy cloud conditions.
I expected more from this cluster but found it fairly unremarkable, maybe I needed better conditions? Will be good to take another look next year in better conditions.

M17 / Omega nebula

M17 / Omega nebula / NGC6618
Constellation - Sagittarius
Bright nebula

Date - 21/8/12
Location - Narkurs
Seeing - IV fairly poor
SQM - 21.3 (NELM 6.2)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 10mm Pentax XW x153 TFoV 0˚27'

Sketch Materials - White Conte' pastels and ink

Sketch notes
Easy find but this was the last sketch of the evening and some mid level cloud and wind problems which made viewing difficult to pick out fainter details.

M2

M2 / NGC7089
Constellation - Aquarius
Globular cluster

Date - 10/8/12
Location - Home
Time - 2335-0015
Seeing - III
SQM - 20.1 (NELM 5.5)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 7mm Pentax XW x218 TFoV 0˚19

Sketch materials - White pastel and ink

Sketch notes
Another trickyish find as lacked nearby stars to star hop.
Lovely round central core with small 'arms' branching out on both north and south sides.
At mag 6.6 its not a really bright glob but it was my favourite of the evenings viewings.

M12

M12 / NGC6218 / Gumball globular
Constellation - Ophiuchus
Globular cluster

Date - 11/8/12
Location - Home
Time - 2300-2335
Seeing - III
SQM - 20.05 (NELM 5.5)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 10mm Pentax XW x153 TFoV 0˚27

Sketch materials - White pastels and ink

Sketch notes
Didnt seem to have the brightness of M14 even though on paper it is mag 6.8.
Central core larger and more spread out and lacked the surrounding stars around the glob.
All the stars resolved to the centre and looked very nice with higher magnification but sketched with the same as EP as M14 for comparison.

M14

M14 / NGC6402
Constellation - Ophiuchus
Globular cluster

Date - 11/8/12
Location - Home
Time - 2215-2300
Seeing - III
SQM - 20.05 (NELM 5.5)

Telescope - 12" f/5
EP - 10mm Pentax XW x153 TFoV 0˚27

Sketch materials - White pastels and ink

Sketch notes
Fairly tricky find as no real guide stars to star hop.
Very nice glob with the a bright central core gradually spreading out, could 'just' resolve all the stars.
